"Morn" for Female Name
|
| Q |
老师Morn可以作为一个女孩子的名字吗 多谢老师指点
|
| A |
Hi, Suchi, Unlike Chinese names where one can choose any combination of characters for a name, in English, the general practice is to choose a name that is usually used as a given name. But then of course if you would like to be different, you can make up your own!As for choosing "Morn" as a female name, I like the meaning of it, but then since it sounds just like "mourn", it is probably not a good choice. One alternative is "Dawn" since it is a generally used name, and it has similar meaning as "morning".

What can I memory more new words? And how can I prove grammer?
|
| A |
Hi, Mickey, To memorize new words, it is important to remember them in context, for example in a sentence or a phrase. In addition to memorizing them, it is important to use them. If you use them, you lose them!As for grammar, practice, practice, practice! - John

Keeping an English Diary
|
| Q |
Teacher John Doe: how do u do? my question is i want to keep an English diary, but there may be xome mistake im my diary here and there. i can not find a teacher to correct them .should the eorrors stay im the diary for ever? i fell puzzled abot it .for this reason, i still don;t keep an English diary, will u tell me what should i do?
|
| A |
Hi, Sweetwind, That is an excellent way to practice your English. And your question is a very interesting one.A diary is a very personal thing, so I probably would not want others to read mine unless they are very close friends. I would say that you don't need to feel like you must have the errors corrected in your diary. As time goes by, your English will improve and then you look back and it will be encouraging to know that you have improved. What do you think? - John

Coping with Abusive Language
|
| Q |
My friend who believes in herself is now suffering under her boss's abusive language, and she says she will be a patient of mental illness sooner or later. Please tell me the important verse in Holly Bible about how to overcome tougue sinners.
|
| A |
Hi, Rosa, That is not an easy situation to endure. I think it is important for your friend to realize that she is a person of value because she was created in the image of God and it is not changed by how her boss talks to her (Psalm 139:14). The second thing that could help her would be to realize the ultimate motivation of her boss' abuse - probably his own insecurity: he abuses others to try to make him feel better about himself, or he is trying to use that to control others. Encourage your friend to seek peace from God (1 Pet 5:7). I am not a counsellor, so I would suggest that you ask for assistance from someone more qualified like your pastor. Rocking Around the Christmas Tree
|
| Q |
Mr Doe, "Rocking around the Xmas Tree" is to describe people dancing around the tree, I guess. But I don't know if it is right or not. Could you explain what exactly "rocking around" means?
|
| A |
Hi,Sandy, The word "rock" can actually mean a few different things when used as a verb. For example: 1. The mother rocked her baby to sleep. Here it means she is moving her baby back and forth. 2. The bomb explosion rocked the buildings all around. Here it means vibrated or shoke. Then there was the song back in 1950s called "Rock Around the Clock". It is very well-known, and often dancing is associated with it. So "rocking around the Christmas tree" is probably derived from that. It refers to people dancing and moving in a circle around the Christmas tree, often holding hands. - John

Living : Countable or Uncountable
|
| Q |
Is "living"a countable noun or a unc.noun?
|
| A |
Hi,Sally, Living can actually be countable or uncountable.Example: 1. She makes a living as a shopkeeper. 2. The standard of living in Beijing is getting higher and higher. But note that "make a living" is a common phrase and people don't say: "They sell newspapers for two livings." It is always : "They sell newspapers for a living."

Effectively Improve English
|
| Q |
Dear John Doe teacher, I am an undergraduate, but I want to learn english well so as to pass enterance examination of graduate in 1th,2005. Could give me some some advices on how to effictively improve english as soon as possible? I always feel the structure of english sentence is too complicated to easily understand and identify. Could you give me some practical tip to easily analyse and understand the structure of sentences? Best wishes yours XinHui
|
| A |
Hi,Xinhui, Your English is quite good.Learning English well is a bit different from being able to pass your entrance exam especially if you are required to understand sentence structures. Since you have just a year to do that, I think it will be a challenge. I would suggest that you work on the language structures last. To improve English fast, you need to be hearing it and using it often so that it becomes natural to you. Even if you don't have much opportunity to speak it, listen to it as much as possible. It takes self-discipline. I would suggest that you set a goal for yourself on how much time to spend on it everyday or every week. - John

Dear John, I wonder if you can tell me how to improve oral English and listening English, thank you very much. Best regards, Alice
|

Hi,Alice, I think one of the best ways is to mimic. We have a serial story on line now. So you can listen to it and read along with the story-teller. Do it three times a week. If you feel confident, you can close your eyes and just listen and see if you understand. Only open your eyes if you don't. Try it and let me know how it goes.- John

Hi, Nancy, ABC could mean many things. For example, a friend can offer you some ABC gum, but you won't want it because it means "after-been-chewed" gum! However, I think in the context of a person being described as an ABC, it probably means that he is American born Chinese. - John
